#NaPoWriMo
Everyone who has participated in NaNoWriMo can guess what this acronym means. National Poetry Writing Month sits on the cusp of Spring, just as the year begins to truly warm up and trees put out new growth.
For the poetry lover, this is the perfect time to not only break into those books of verses, but to try your hand at crafting some of your own.
Don’t worry! Elaborate rhythms and rhyme schemes aren’t necessary here.
The only measure of what is good is your own taste.
That being said, sometimes, the blank page is the biggest hindrance to getting words on the page. So I’ve put together some of the best poetry challenges I could find around Instagram to help spark your Muse.
Scribble one of these prompts from these poetry challenges across the top of your page and see what it says to you!
- #escapril2022 by @letsescapril. This is by far the most popular poetry challenge I found and for good reason. The prompts are simple, evocative, and enjoyable.
- April Poetry Prompts by @theguelphpoet. I enjoyed the whimsy behind these prompts and how they spoke to my Southern heart. There’s something about a “twenty dollar sundress” and “gas station coffee” that drew me in.
- #rgnapowrimo by @raggedyghost. Single word prompts, the sparse suggestiveness of these prompts are perfect for the poet who wants just a nudge down the road.
- #seekingprompts by @seekingthepurpose. For the romantic, these eloquent prompts are lush with emotion and movement.
- #theconstantpoetprompts by @theconstantpoet. Another one of my favorites, these prompts come from a New Orleans resident and always impress me with their creativity and breadth of subject matter. A very good choice if you want to try a lot of different subjects and techniques.
